Dreamliner expansion prompts Toray action
Friday, 21 February 2014

Having only announced an expansion of Torayca carbon fibre prepreg at its plant in Tacoma, Washington at the start of February, Toray is planning to build a second carbon fibre plant in South Carloina.

This is in addition to building a second Torayca production line at its Ishikawa Plant in Japan, expected to start production in February 2015. In December 2013 Toray shipped prepreg for Boeing 787 aircraft from Ishikawa Plant for the first time.

Toray has now purchased approximately 1.6 million square metres of land in Spartanburg County in South Carolina and says it plans to invest roughly US$1 billion in its advanced materials businesses in the US by 2020. A carbon fibre manufacturing plant at the South Carolina site will create 500 new jobs.

All of this activity supports the increased production of composites-intensive 787 Dreamliner aircraft announced recently by Boeing.

Tellingly, Boeing assembles and delivers 787s in two locations ? Everett, Washington, and North Charleston, South Carolina.
